Your New Crafts Staple For Spring

Clay creations have become a nice addition to one’s home and a form of self expression since the prehistoric times, and recently creatives have been starting their own businesses turning clay into jewelry or home decor. This soothing hobby is taking over social media, with Instagram and TikTok users utilizing their accounts to promote their small ceramics businesses. For example, you may have come across the talented creator Lisa Asano on social media, who makes the art of ceramics look too easy.

Home Decor

If you have the time and accessibility to a pottery wheel, whether that be at a local pottery shop in Athens or in your ceramics class at UGA, try forming a vase with a unique shape and pattern. Other creations could include abstract sculptures, bowls, and jars for storage. Imagine the satisfaction you’ll receive when you look around your home and see the unique decor you created all by yourself! These pieces will bring a special feeling to whatever space you showcase them in.

Clay Earrings

Because of their simple and easy-to-make looks, clay earrings have been a spring trend for a couple years now. Everything needed to make these earrings — clay, earring hooks, and tools — can be found at a craft store or online, making this craft both accessible and affordable. If you do not want to spend money on a single pair of clay earrings, buy the inexpensive supplies and create several pairs for you and your friends!

Clay Rings

TikTok is known to revive and create new trends, such as the popular videos of friends making colorful clay rings now. I recently got together with my roommates to take a quick study break and make some ourselves, and they came out way better than expected! The supplies were cheap, the process was easy, and now I have some cute new rings to add a bold touch to my outfits. Scroll through Pinterest to gain some clay ring design inspiration!

Self-Care and Creative Expression!

Beyond all the selling, purchasing, and perfecting, the art of ceramics gives one the opportunity to take some time for self-care and reflection. When I took a ceramics class in high school, I would always listen to podcasts or music and take my time to create a piece that I loved. It’s so good for you to get lost in an activity, as it centers you and distracts from unnecessary stress or overthinking. If you take time out of your busy day to try a fun artistic hobby, I guarantee you won’t want to stop!

I hope this inspired you to purchase some clay and try out the art of ceramics for yourself! If not, I hope that it encouraged you to take time to do something purely out of enjoyment, not requirement. Remember to take care of yourself, get creative, and support small businesses!
