The Best Style Moments in Holiday Movies
It’s that time of year again that is dedicated solely to watching holiday movies and eating copious amounts of baked goods— or at least that’s the goal. Fellow creatives will agree that not only are holiday films nostalgic and cozy but they are also a feast for the eyes. Of course, this is largely due to the incredible fashion portrayed in Christmas movies. Filled to the brim with luxurious fabrics and vibrant hues, holiday fashion always packs a punch. Read ahead for some of the best fashion in Christmas movies from classics and newer films alike.
Keira Knightley, Love Actually
Keira Knightley’s wedding gown in Love Actually is untraditional and fashion forward, making it one of the most memorable and recognizable gowns in recent film history. Knightley’s slightly risqué, sheer, and feathery number fell in line with the 90’s rom-com. It’s rumored that Knightly almost wore a different dress, but the films’ costume designer selected this iconic number at the last minute.
Vera-Ellen, White Christmas
It would be impossible for this list to exist without at least one mention of White Christmas. Vera-Ellen’s pink gown is something of a sparkling cotton candy dream. With its extravagant balloon sleeves, fitted bodice, and gigantic skirt, this dress cannot be beat. The gown makes its debut early in the film for “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing” number and sets the tone for the numerous fantastic outfits in the film that are yet to come.
Macaulay Culkin, Home Alone
Kevin McAllister was not only a scheming child genius but also had great style. When home alone, instead of wearing some sort of dingy sweatpants and tee shirt combo like a normal eight-year-old boy, Kevin sports some of the most perfectly layered festive looks I have ever seen. Never without some form of flannel, knit, or corduroy, Kevin is certainly a master of holiday wear.
Beverly D’Angelo, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
While you may not expect to find any note-worthy fashion statements from a film like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, that notion is proved wrong again and again. D’Angelo’s stunning Victorian blouse paired with a pleated satin green midi skirt makes for the perfect maximalist Christmas evening look. This ensemble would be equally at home worn by the fireplace with family, or as part of a Gucci Ready-To-Wear collection.
Judy Garland, Meet Me in St. Louis
Alexa, play Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Judy Garland. While not traditionally a Christmas movie, Meet Me in St. Louis carries enough holiday punch to be counted in this list. Garland’s red velvet puff-sleeve gown is the epitome of Christmas and holiday spirit. Paired with silk hand gloves and a string of pearls, this classic look is impeccably chic, and will never go out of style.
