For the Boys Who Aren't Into Fashion: 5 Ways to Instantly Improve Your Style

Let’s face it, most men struggle with fashion. Whether it’s because they couldn’t care less about the clothes they wear, or they don’t want others to think they “care too much,” some are in a tough place when it comes to fashion. Men should not only know they have freedom to explore fashion, but they should also see the importance of finding their own style, which is why we’re here to help!

Fashion is a fun and easy way to express yourself and can also help you gain self-assurance and confidence, so even though toxic gender norms have made you think otherwise, fashion is an extraordinary thing for both women and men to enjoy! We unfortunately also live in a world where appearance matters. Even though looks aren’t the most important thing, first impressions are important when it comes to your personal and professional life, so it would be a good idea to start exploring fashion and finding your individual style (Centeno).

If you feel like you have no idea where to start or feel too embarrassed to ask for help, here are five easy tips on how to spice up your closet (and your life!).

1. Go for the classics

Clothing goes out of style quickly, so a safe choice to make when it comes to buying clothes is investing in the classic, timeless pieces. Make sure you have classic t-shirts, good quality jeans, basic sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets, sneakers, and boots before diving into more trendy clothing.

2. Size down

One of the simplest, yet overlooked, fixes to your style is to make sure your clothes fit properly. Men tend to buy sizes that are too big for them and as a result look sloppy and distorted. Chances are, a simple outfit that fits nicely will look way better than a fancy outfit that’s too big, so next time you’re shopping go for a smaller size, and don’t be scared to visit the tailoring shop!

3. Drop the Distracting Patterns and Colors

Even though bright colors and patterns are fun to wear, if you’re just now starting your fashion journey it may be easier to stick to neutrals. Buying colorful and patterned clothes is not out of the question, but make sure you have plenty of white, black, blue, gray, beige, and brown pieces in your closet to mix and match for your day-to-day wardrobe.

4. Accessorize

If you’re ever bored with your outfit but don’t want to make any drastic changes, accessories are the way to go, and they’re so easy to implement into your style. Depending on the look you’re going for, you can try adding a belt to a simple t-shirt and pant look, sunglasses with your button-down, or try out hats, scarfs, and even jewelry!

5. The Swapping Method

When you start to get more comfortable with your style, you can implement the swapping method. This is a great way to introduce a new piece of clothing into your wardrobe because you only switch out 1 old piece with 1 new piece. You’ll find that your outfit still looks great, has a new mood, and you didn’t go overboard (Nguyen, 2020).

Guys, don’t be afraid to get into fashion! Although your value stems from way more than what you wear, improving your everyday style and overall appearance will boost your self-esteem, help you find a unique voice, and show others just how cool you are. Good luck and have fun!
