Rouge Executive Board Profiles: Sharon Autry
“My experience here at UGA has been absolutely fantastic, and Rouge has played a large part in that!”
Before joining Rouge, Sharon Autry, a senior Fashion Merchandising major with a Business and English double minor, realized that she really missed the feeling of being on a time, the way she frequently was in high school. Rouge brought that feeling back for her when she got involved with the magazine in the fall of 2018.
“I've always loved writing, and I've always loved fashion, so, when I found Rouge on the UGA student organization website, it seemed like a perfect fit. I attended my first meeting in August 2018, and I applied for the position of Writing Editor that same day,” said Sharon.
Sharon enjoys reading (romance and adventure stories mainly), watching films, creative writing (short stories and poetry), and daydreaming. She spends her free time grabbing coffee with her sister, taking walks around campus, and dancing in her room.
“To me, Rouge is a product of many different people’s creativity and drive,” said Sharon. “It represents the various skills and ideas its members bring to the table.” Sharon hopes that members are able to find a creative outlet while being a part of Rouge. She also believes that Rouge provides a wonderful learning experience in collaboration between teams.
“I feel like members are able to get insight into the way publications are run while also making friends, practicing self-expression, and augmenting their personal portfolios.”
From her time at the magazine, Sharon has learned a lot about the strong interdependency between all of the various parts of a magazine.
“Before joining Rouge, I did not realize how strong the interdependency between various magazine sectors truly is. At Rouge, there is no ‘I’ in ‘team,’ something I've learned while working with and depending on members and team leaders equipped with skills and knowledge that I am unfamiliar with.”
Q & A with SHARON AUTRY
Q: What is your wardrobe staple?
A: My Anthropologie silk shirtdress.
Q: Go-to-outfit?
A: Leggings and a button down or sweater for casual days, dress with low-heeled boots for dressier days.
Q: Item in your wardrobe you’ll never give up?
A: Ralph Lauren denim duster that I inherited from my grandmother.
Q: Dream item you wish you owned?
A: A pair of Meher Kakalia Queen Heel Boots in Comet Grey/Ocean Cement.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Classic with a touch of boho; I love interesting textures and patterns, and I'm generally attracted to loose silhouettes in dresses and coats.
Q: Do you have a favorite brand to wear or place to shop?
A: My favorite place to shop is Anthropologie. I love that their stores change based on location, and I often find their products to be more unique than what I see from other brands.
Q: Favorite designer?
A: My favorite designer is Alexander McQueen. I remember picking up the book "Savage Beauty ," as a child, which displayed the clothing curated by the MET following his suicide, and being absolutely blown away by the artistry of his work. McQueen included a lot of social commentary - on gender equality, issues with the fashion industry, etc. - in his shows, which I admired a lot. With his work, he used his own internal turmoil to create stunning, beautiful pieces of art, and this realization was a turning point for me in terms of how I view clothing and its relationship to art, power, and self-expression.
Q: Beauty Staple?
A: Brown eyeliner (not picky about the brand) since it makes my eyes pop!
