Indie Sleaze: Now and Then
Indie sleaze–a grunge inspired, messy, hipster style driven by indie rock, Britpop, disco and electropop. Highly popular around the years 2006 to 2014, but we see it making a comeback in modern day fashion.
Indie sleaze style embraces the “rolled out of bed”, “messy girl” look and makes it stylish. It places an emphasis on mismatching proportions and being extremely chaotic. These mismatching proportions could be pairing a chic dainty dress with a worn-out fur coat and scuffed Converse, for example. The Strokes and MGMT were some of the many bands that powered the aesthetic, along with style icons like Sky Ferreria, Kate Moss and the Olsen Twins. As the trend progressed, it took over the social media platform known as Tumblr, and became popularized with pieces such as Dr. Martens, American Apparel tennis skirts, massive sunglasses, holey flannels and skinny jeans.
In 2024, we see a clear revival of the aesthetic, especially after the release of Charli xcx’s album, “BRAT.” The Today Show reporter Sophie Caldwell defines the term “brat summer” popularized by the album as, “accepting your imperfections while embracing the chaos.” This message runs parallel with what indie sleaze is all about–being rebellious, chaotic and messy. Charli xcx along with musicians Olivia Rodrigo and The Dare have been pioneers in reviving indie sleaze.
Stores such as Urban Outfitters, OMighty, Anine Bing and Jaded London are just a few companies incorporating the aesthetic into their brand. Some of the many pieces we see prominent in today’s revival of indie sleaze are graphic tees and skirts, statement tights, fur coats, chunky jewelry and micro shorts.
The resurgence of indie sleaze showcases a cultural shift towards more self-expression and individualism in fashion. Artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Charli xcx and The Dare are not just reviving the aesthetic, but the mindset as well–the mindset that celebrates the chaos of life rather than striving for perfection.
