Aesthetics and Styling Decisions in Grease

Since the iconic and fabulous musical romance, Grease, was released in 1978, we've been hopelessly devoted to greaser, Danny Zuko, and blonde sweetheart, Sandy Olsson.

As Halloween approaches, couples around America will show up to parties sporting wild blonde curls and chic leather outfits recreating this duo’s powerful ensemble. The retro diners, vintage hotrods, and slicked back do's are only part of what immerses Grease fans into 50's America. The real icing on the cake is the rockin'-n-rollin' styles we're still obsessing over today. How can we swipe styles from our favorite Rydell High School students to keep from looking like a beauty school dropout this fall season? We're about to

tell you more, tell you more…

Let's start with our 50's queen, Sandra Dee.

Sandy, the goody-two-shoes preppy gal we meet at the beginning of the film, goes totally rogue, revealing a rebellious greaser girl by the movie's end. Throughout the Sandy spectrum are some styles we simply need this fall season. Here's how to work 'em.

The Greaser leather jacket:

The iconic carnival scene where Sandy shows up in her killer leather-look left Danny, and really all of us, in shock. Leather jackets are a closet must-have. It could be jet black like Sandy's or even a slate grey shade. This piece can be dressed up or down, which makes it perfect for nearly every occasion ranging from a game under the chilly Saturday night lights to a fancy October date night and everything in between. Pair with fitted black jeans, fun booties, and a bodysuit for a fancier evening. Rock some distressed light wash jeans, fun sneakers, and a graphic tee under your jacket for a cooler and more casual look. The options are endless with this wardrobe staple and soon enough you'll be making a statement entrance just as gawk-worthy as Sandra Dee's.

Sandy’s colorful sunnies:

While Danny is sprinting around the school track trying to steal a glance from his girl, we can't keep our eyes off of Sandy's accessory game, especially taking note of her bright red shades. A colorful pair of sunglasses may be the exact pop that your outfit is missing. Pair with simple neutral shades to add a playful finishing touch to your otherwise sleek and minimalistic look. Also kind of perfect for a Saturday in Athens, huh? You need this accessory. They're the one that you want (ooh, ooh, ooh, honey.)

What famous movie squad surpasses the glam of all other famous movie squads? Of COURSE, it has to be the Pink Ladies. We may not all be able to snag one of these iconic pink jackets, but there are a few other accessories we'd love to swipe.

The Pink Lady Scarves:

These silk scarves are a 50's fashion necessity and lucky for us they are back in style. Choose a solid shade for a classier look or a bolder bright print to express your own personal aesthetic. Knot one around a high pony for the perfect trendy hair accessory or tie around your neck as an ascot for a chic look that we know you can rock. The versatility of this piece is fabulous. One scarf can easily be styled into several unique accessories. Yes, please!

Who says 1950's fashion has to stay in the '50s? Thanks to the rockin' aesthetics in one of our fav flicks, our style is about to be hotter than Grease Lightning.
