New York Fashion Week Jumpstarts 2024 Trends

It is that time of year again for New York Fashion Week’s Fall/Winter show; showcased from February 9 to 14, 2024, designers, models, and celebrities alike came together to set the stage for this year’s fashion and beauty trends. As consumers of both entertainment and goods, New York Fashion Week redefines fashion, giving us a sneak peek into the trends we will inevitably succumb to the following year.

This year's NYFW focused on maximalism as a central theme, portrayed through the models' attire, makeup, and accessories. For example, Marc Jacobs took a distinctive route in his portrayal of maximalism through his pieces and style; his models looked as if they had come straight out of a department store warehouse, with “mannequin” nails- nude nails to match the skin- and “mod” lashes to give them an unnatural look. In comparison, designers such as Proenza Schouler and PatBo had a more subdued approach to their looks, manicuring their models with varying solid red or black acrylics or the occasional French tip (Rushing, 2024). When turning our gaze from the nail to the face, many bold choices come into view, including the viral “glass skin” by Maison Margiela, which has taken the world by storm. Pat Mcgrath, who created these "porcelain doll-like" makeup effects, deserves all the credit. Soon enough, everyone will be donning the dewy glass skin, whether it be for a walk to class or a night out on the town, as brands such as Charlotte Tilbury produce products that make this look replicable at home (Lapidos, 2024).

Aside from the outstanding makeup looks, this year's winter and fall runway shows presented a wide variety of clothing styles. TikTok and Pinterest trends may be predicting the future regarding fashion and aesthetics, as the “mob wife fashion,” which seemed to be a micro trend, fleetingly popular on TikTok, may be backed by some of the fashion moguls of our time. Peter Do, a second-time designer for Helmut Lang, featured an array of models draped in dramatic leather coats while Cowan and many others paid homage to Upper East Side Fashion- as close to the mob as you can get (Webb, 2024).

While some look towards studded leather and heavy lid liners, others turn to the West for inspiration. Western attire is coming back into style, as seen in Louis Vuitton’s showcase, which is full of heavy denim, belts, and a multitude of cowboy boots (Sayej, 2024).

In this year's fall/winter show, viewers can admire the complex and intricately designed pieces that will set the tone for this season's trends, whether at home or in the front row. As we seek guidance from fashion moguls, their ingenious designs reveal a captivating influence on our wardrobe and trend preferences. Centering our attention on these mesmerizing trends that are sculpting the future of fashion, it is imperative to reflect on how these dynamic influences shape our identity in an attempt to maintain a sense of self in this ever-changing world.
