New Year, New Me — Rouge Magazine

2025. New year, new me— or at least I hope so. With the new year comes the opportunity to revamp the life you have been living. Whether by taking up a new hobby, a healthier lifestyle, or finally losing contact with that pesky situation you have been holding onto (that's so 2024). It might also be time to start itching to spend the sparkly new Christmas money; if so, you are in luck.

Most fashion brands have already started pumping out their new season’s line. As the year progresses, we will see what trends overtake the internet and the real world. As they say, out with the old and in with the new. At the start of the year, trends are coming to fruition and have time to change. As someone susceptible to the hottest trend, I am excited to see this year's development. To keep myself on trend and well-dressed, I look toward 2025 trend forecasts. Experts are predicting statement tank tops, hot pants, and the return of what I would call the dreadful skinny jeans and suede. Experts are split over the forecast for accessories as some predict the uptick in bag charms while others see the demise of purse carrying.

Statement Tank Top:

The infamous tank top is a wardrobe staple of the average seven-year-old and runway model. British Vogue has highlighted the widespread use of tank tops on the runway as this year progresses, deeming them a trend for 2025. However, rather than being the fundamental piece, the tank top is what they call the “cincher” of the outfit ( Borrelli-Persson L et al., 2025).

Hot Pants:

Hot pants, even though they definitely won't keep you warm, have topped the charts of fashion trends recently, as Cosmopolitan says it's the year of micro. Hot pants may be micro, but are a piece that can elevate the basis of any outfit (Flum, D,2024). You can wear them with tights, layers, boots, or even a long coat if you want the coverage, but even by themselves, they are stunning. Hot pants may be the way to go this year, from dinner to the club.

Skinny Jeans:

Skinny jeans, the denim that has haunted many of us since the early 2010s, are making a surprising comeback. As loser silhouettes have become the new norm for the well-dressed, it's shocking to see skinny jeans returning. But here we are. As name brands such as Coach and Maison Margiela lean back into the tight silhouette, it's time to stay on the lookout as skinny jeans come back in, bringing a wave of nostalgia and intrigue (Dolan, L 2025).

Suede:

Suede has been named a fabric of the year as a pillar of the boho chic aesthetic, which has been regaining traction recently. However, as the spring months begin, suede attire may not be the most comfortable choice, depending on the weather. But never fret; suede accessories are also set to trend (Laplaca, A. 2025). Add suede to your outfits through shoes, as Who What Wear states that suede sneakers are set to dominate the fashion world as they provide a “rich” look.

The Purse v No Purse Dilemma:

To Jane Birkin or to not Jane Birkin is the question. Handbags, purses, and tote bags are staples; no one has time or ability to carry all their necessary belongings with them, and they can elevate an outfit. As committing to a statement purse can be difficult, bag charms have become a way to customize and interchange purses without fully committing. Celebrities such as Dua Lipa and Lily Allen have taken a page out of Jane Birkin’s book, taking charms to their purses as customization and personalization, and so should we (Dolan, L 2025). However, the “it” bag may be declining. Emily Kirkpatrick, a fashion writer in correspondence with Refinery29, says they may decrease as we look towards other methods of carrying our essentials, such as custom pockets (Baker, E. 2025). As the year continues, it is time to experiment and decide if the purse or no purse trend is for you.
