Looking Ahead: Fall 2022 Men's Fashion Trends

The collections that graced the runways earlier this year had a certain energy that rejuvenated the high fashion scene in a gradually post-covid world and amidst an era where more fashion than ever is at everyone's fingertips. Looking ahead there are a myriad of design elements and trends that will dominate the streets in the months ahead. While some are likely to only dominate this season before fading away to the trend cycle, other pairings may continue to create a head-turning fit.

Pointed shoes but also bulky, platform shoes (clogs and crocs) were seen on the runway. Tailored, hourglass, double-breasted outerwear met fitted bomber jackets and over-the-top puffer jackets. Oversized, tailored, and baggy trousers contrasted with Y2K-inspired low-rises. Faux fur and shearling accents stood against a rejuvenated love for leather from designers. Bright red caught viewers' attention in head-to-toe fits and bright accents in a world of muted colors that still saw reminiscences of last season's love for various bright colors and patterns.

Here are a few of the most dominant and remarkable fashion trends to take note of for the coming months.

Live. Laugh. Leather.

Left to Right: Prada,Fendi Rhude, Courrèges

Both men’s and women’s collections featured faux leather, but men’s runway looks really took leather to a whole new level. Accenting with leather, full leather tops, and making leather the star is a notable trend that not only makes jaws drop but just makes a look effortlessly come together and appear chic but also masuline.

Double-Breasted is Back

Left to Right: Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Dior Men

This is my favorite recurring design that was seen across several menswear collections this season. Not only does it just look good and clean in design, but the structure returns to the nostalgic hourglass and power shoulders from the 40s and 80s.

Epic Outerwear

Left to Right: Dries van Noten, Casablanca, Burberry

Fall menswear collections are destined to include outwear, but this year epic and diverse outerwear was the focal point of the runway. Oversized, dramtic puffers dominated in extreme ways but met toned down versions of the elevated bomber jacket and again. The double-breasted design made its way in through its classic design but also in the robe-style coats which was surprisingly popular among collections.

I See Red

Left to Right: Rhude, Burberry, Tom Ford, Atelier Versace

One thing is not like the others. And this season, it's definitely this bold color trend. Even Simu Liu rocked a head to toe bright red suit at the Oscars. This surprising color breaks through a sea of neutrals and playful patterns. Bright red as featured above can be seen in full-fledged looks but also as an accent to upscale day-to-day looks.

Faux Fur Yes

Left to Right: Dolce & Gabbana, Courrèges, Burberry, Off-White

Fur also edged its way back into the narrative this season. Menswear collections really took faux fur and shearling to a whole new level. Dolce & Gabbana featured a head to toe look with an oversized coat and dramatic moon style fur boots, while others accessorized and accented both outerwear and primary levels with surprising fur looks. This will be a trend to watch, fur much like leather is very cyclical historically, but its extreme contrast to other popular designs this year points to it being  a fad for the 2022 season.

In the midst of surprising, exciting, and rejuvenating menswear collections, one thing cannot be ignored, the fall 2022 fashion season will be epic and dramatic. There is so much room to explore and make these trends your own, so be creative and lean into the bold this summer and fall.
