Trends of New York Fashion Week
New York Fashion Week is not simply a showcase of new collections; it sets the tone for upcoming seasons in the fashion world. This year, the runways were filled with bold statements, from an overflow of stripes to the continuing influence of bows. Designers pushed the boundaries of creativity, blending high fashion with streetwear and gender-fluid designs. As this year’s Spring 2025 New York Fashion Week wrapped up, it became clear that the trends emerging from the runways will influence both the high fashion elite and day-to-day closets around the world.
This New York Fashion Week saw some notable shifts in clothing trends compared to the previous year. According to Tagwalk, stripes surged in popularity, with a 264% increase, overtaking the once dominant florals, which dropped by 22%. The incorporation of stripes is apparent in shows from designers such as Palomo Spain and Proenza Schouler. Bold horizontal stripes stretch across garments, creating a sense of movement, while sleek vertical lines add structure to the designs. Fringes also gained traction, rising by 23%, with designers like Monse featuring them in their runways. In the Monse show, cascading fringes drape elegantly from skirts and dresses, creating the illusion of a maxi skirt and adding a sense of fluidity to the runway. Pants also made a comeback with a rise of 19%, as skirts saw a 12% decrease, signaling an apparent shift toward more structured looks for spring 2025.
These clothing trends were also accompanied by emerging trends in clothing details. Hazy sheers were a large component this season, featured in the runways of Kahite and Grace Ling. These shows incorporated new interpretations of sheer garments, embracing layers of translucent fabrics to create dreamy, elusive silhouettes. Grace Ling’s sheers induced an aura of mystery, using natural and neutral tones. Another key trend was the incorporation of bold textures on the runway, seen in the floral designs of Brandon Maxwell and the crochet details in the Kahite show. These textures brought dimension to the runway, offering a new palette of fabrics and patterns. Bows were also a recurring motif in this year’s New York Fashion Week, an ongoing trend that has been carried over for quite some time. The incorporation of a bow can add a playful yet elegant touch to the runway. Ulla Johnson provided a new interpretation of this trend, tying pieces of fabric around the models’ necks, offering the illusion of a collar. These trends reflected a balance between softness and structure, speaking to the designers’ diverse creativity throughout their designs.
This Spring 2025 New York Fashion Week has set the stage for a dynamic, transformative season in the fashion world. With new designs ranging from long fringes to the juxtaposition of hazy sheers with textured fabrics, designers have offered new perspectives on clothing structure and fluidity. As these trends trickle down from the runway to everyday wardrobes, the impact of the trends emerging from this New York Fashion Week will be undeniable, shaping the fashion landscape for seasons to come.
